Rope Making

Rope-making Basics

and various Types of ropes

Ropes are made of yarns, which are twisted into strands, and the strands are then counter-twisted together, producing a rope.

Hand-made rope can be produced in different ways.

The simplest way is to start from bundles of yarns and twist them individually, then fix  them together at one end and counter-twist them to close the rope.

Using  a rope-making machine combines those two phases in one operation.

This site focuses on the former approach, although many fundamental notions apply to either of them.

This site deals mainly with traditional ways to make twisted rope, using the simple tools and techniques I use and teach myself.
